UPDATES

Front of House          Back of House Interior of House Updates

Christmas/New Year 2007

Celebrated Christmas and New Year in Crete for the first time.  I recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a Christmas like the ones we used to have!  It was beautiful but not over the top or hectic.  The shops were busy on Christmas Eve, but not anything like we experience in England.  New Year in the centre of Chania was as you might expect, plenty of fireworks and people everywhere, cars stopping in the middle of the roads and scooters parked on pedestrian crossings!!  It was fantastic.

September/October

My husband, son and partner went for 3 weeks and had a wonderful holiday.  Didn't do much with the house other than some varnishing.  It was very hot and we wanted to spend some time together.

My son and his partner took a lot of the pictures I have added to the site during the holiday.

June 07

Had the solar panel fitted and its so good to have some hot water on tap!  We also bought some lovely handmade furniture from some Greek friends of ours who own an hotel in Chania.  Its very traditional and goes very well with the style of our house.

March 07

My leg is healing nicely but I just had to go back for 2 weeks to 'help' my progress.  I could not drive but had lots of help from my many friends in the village and Chania.  It rained a lot but I did not care, I just made the most of my time reading and relaxing.

February 07

My plans to return to Crete are on hold as I unfortunately broke my leg 5 days before I was due to fly!!  I am now hoping to return before the end of March.

29 December 06

At last we are able to stay in the house!!  We were over in September/October for over 5 weeks and spent a lot of the time having work completed to enable us to spend at least some of the time in the house.

During the summer we had railings put up around the garden and roof terrace.

We still need a Solar Panel for the hot water, but I was over for a week in December for 9 days, and managed very well boiling water on the stove or by kettle when I needed to.

I am going back in February 07 when I hope to make arrangements for the Solar Panel and some other work to be done before Easter.

7 May 06

Another Easter in Crete and I must say I think it was the best so far.  I have so many friends there now it really is like going home every time I return.

I did not do much with the house other than sweep the floors and wash the windows and doors down following the winter.

I have made arrangements for railings around the garden and terrace and these should be done by September.  My intentions are to make the studio ready to stay in when I return at the beginning of September.  I will be staying until the second week in October - over 5 weeks!!

20 December 05

I have returned from spending 2 glorious weeks in Crete.  I was there from 27 November to 11 December and the weather was beautiful for the whole of my stay.  The house is coming along nicely now and I can finally see my dream becoming a reality.

I was hoping the bathrooms would be completed before I left for England, but due to a delay with the suppliers, the basins and wc's could not be fitted and will be done as soon as the supplier provides the taps and shower fittings.

I have added some more photos and you can see the progress made since my last visit.  I plan to return for Greek Easter at the end of April 06.

12 October 05

Returned from a week in Crete last week and the house is looking more like a home now with beautifully tiled floors throughout.  The shower room in the studio and the main bathroom are being tiled and the WC, shower and wash basins will be fitted in both.  The bath I want for the main bathroom will be fitted next year.

My favourite place of all is the roof terrace.  Now it is tiled and painted it looks wonderful and the views of the village and surrounding mountains are breathtaking.

I will be going back at the end of November, when the current work on the house will be completed.  I will be adding more pictures to the site on my return.

25 August 05

The plans have changed and we are now having the whole of the house painted interior and exterior.  Floors tiled throughout the house - studio and main 2 storey building and roof terrace.  We will leave the main bathroom to complete next year and the main kitchen will also be fitted next year.

The work will start next week.  I will be returning at the end of September.

25 June 05

Returned from a weeks visit to Fournes and made arrangements for the studio and 'living' room to be made ready for me to stay in for future visits.  As well as the studio, I am having the living room floors tiled and walls painted with the intention of using this as a bedroom until the 2 storey part of the house is completed early next year.  The studio will contain a kitchenette and shower room.  I hope to return at the end of August.

29 January 05

Returned from Chania (also referred to as Hania or Xania) on 24th January after a 10 day visit. I did check on the house and everything is OK. Renovation will resume in the Spring when we hope to complete the two storey building.

31 October 04

I recently returned from a very hot and sunny Crete.  I had a very busy 2 weeks there, looking at new properties for our site combined with varnishing the doors and windows of the house as well as socialising with my family, my friends in Crete and some friends from England, who had travelled with us.

I have added several before and after photos of the interior.  They are of the 2 storey building and I hope to add some of the rest of the house - sitting room and guest studio, when we have upgraded the website during November.

4 August 04

I have just returned from a 3 week visit to Crete and I am pleased to say the house is now ready for  the next phase which will include fitting the kitchen and bathrooms.

I can now see in reality, the house I could only imagine back in 2001.  Friends and family at the time told me I must be mad to want to renovate an old house in the condition it was in then.  They could only see the leaky roofs, dirty walls and floors, rickety stairs and rotten windows and doors.  Where as I could see my dream of a traditional village house with charm and character with the most wonderful views, situated in a beautiful village overlooked by the White Mountains.

My next visit is in October when I will take some pictures of the interior and I will put them on.

9 June 04

NB  more pictures taken Sunday 6 June 04.  Spyros sent these to me on Tuesday 8 June 04.

New doors and windows are in - window sills still to be done.  Garden wall built and ready for render or faced stone (not yet decided).

Look out for more pictures at the end of July.

26 April 04

I spent Easter in Crete, and work on  the house was well under way.

The house had it's first coat of rendering. The wall around the front of the house had been demolished to allow digging out for the septic tank.

Inside the house there was plenty going on. Work was starting on a new bedroom floor, new bathroom and staircase.  Also, internal walls had been reinforced and had a first coat of rendering.

Since my return to the UK, I am informed that the house is now white, having had it's final coat of render and plaster both inside and out. The doors and windows will be fitted shortly and the garden wall is being rebuilt. The new electrical wiring is also in place.

Unfortunately, I will not have any new pictures to put on the site until after my next visit in July.
